Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 26, 2026
Last updated: September 27, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how I handle personal information when you use owenwsl.ca and the Canadian Canola Market Explorer.
I am Owen Wesley Smith-Lépine, an independent freelancer based in Québec, Canada.
I aim to collect only the information reasonably necessary to operate these websites, respond to inquiries and understand how visitors use them.
Information I collect
When you visit the websites
Cloudflare provides web infrastructure for both websites and may process technical connection details such as your IP address, browser and device information, requested pages, and security or log information. The Canola Market Explorer loads its map geometry from its own website.
When you contact me
If you contact me, I may collect information you choose to provide, such as your:
- name;
- email address;
- message; and
- other information you include in your correspondence.
I use this information to respond to you, discuss potential work, provide requested information and manage any resulting business relationship. My business email is handled through Fastmail, which processes your email address, message and any information you include when you email me.
Website analytics
I use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the websites.
Analytics is optional. Google Analytics 4 is loaded only after the shared preference has been accepted.
If you accept analytics, information collected may include:
- pages or sections viewed;
- general interactions with the websites;
- browser and device information;
- session information;
- approximate geographic information; and
- a pseudonymous identifier used to distinguish visits and sessions.
On the Canola Market Explorer, analytics accepted by the visitor records page views, Explorer sections viewed, supported filter changes and data-table openings. The filter-change events do not send selected filter values.
On owenwsl.ca, I do not send the contents of email correspondence to Google Analytics.
I do not use Google Analytics for advertising or remarketing.
Analytics consent and cookies
When a page opens with no saved choice or a rejected choice, Google Analytics 4 does not load on either website.
If you accept analytics, Google Analytics may place first-party analytics cookies in your browser. If you reject it, you can continue to use the websites without analytics.
Both websites use the same owen_analytics_consent cookie. It stores only accepted or rejected for about one year across owenwsl.ca and its subdomains.
You can change this shared choice at any time using Privacy choices in the footer of either website.
If you withdraw consent, I stop future analytics collection through the site and remove analytics cookies that the site is able to remove.
Declining analytics does not limit the normal functionality of the websites.
Why I collect information
I collect and use personal information only for purposes such as:
- responding to inquiries;
- discussing or providing freelance services;
- operating, maintaining and securing the websites;
- understanding how visitors use the websites when they have consented to analytics; and
- improving the usability and content of the websites and the Canola Market Explorer.
I do not sell personal information.
Who may have access
Access to personal information is limited to me and service providers that are reasonably necessary to operate the websites or provide requested services.
When analytics is accepted, Google receives information necessary to provide Google Analytics.
Google Analytics uses information such as browser and device information and approximate geographic information. Google states that IP addresses are used during collection to derive location information and are discarded before being logged in Google Analytics.
Information processed outside Québec
Some service providers, including Google, may process information using infrastructure located outside Québec.
As a result, personal information may be subject to the laws of jurisdictions outside Québec.
Retention and destruction
I retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes for which it was collected and for applicable legal, accounting or business requirements.
I retain contact inquiries while they are needed to respond, manage any resulting work, or meet applicable obligations.
If an inquiry results in a client relationship, relevant business records may be retained longer where required for contractual, tax, accounting or legal purposes.
In the GA4 property I use, event data is set to be retained for 2 months and user data for 14 months. The setting to reset retention on new user activity is enabled. These settings do not necessarily govern aggregate reports or other information Google processes.
When personal information is no longer required, I take reasonable steps to delete it or, where appropriate, anonymize it in accordance with applicable law.
Security
I use reasonable administrative and technological safeguards appropriate to the nature of the information I handle.
However, no method of transmitting or storing information electronically can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Your privacy rights
Subject to applicable law, you may ask to:
- access personal information I hold about you;
- correct inaccurate or incomplete personal information;
- request deletion of personal information I hold about you, where reasonably possible and where I do not need to retain it for a legitimate or legal reason;
- withdraw consent to the use or communication of information where consent is the basis for that use or communication; and
- make a complaint about how your personal information has been handled.
Where applicable, you may also have rights relating to computerized personal information you provided to me.
To exercise a privacy right, contact the person in charge of the protection of personal information using the information below.
Privacy governance and complaints
I am responsible for privacy matters and for protecting the personal information I handle.
Access to personal information is limited to what is necessary for my freelance work and to operate the websites. Information is retained and destroyed according to its purpose, applicable legal requirements and the retention practices described above.
If you have a privacy concern or complaint, contact me using the information below. I will review the matter and respond within a reasonable period based on the nature of the request.
Changes to this policy
I may update this Privacy Policy when my services, technologies or privacy practices change.
The updated policy will show a new Last updated date. If a change materially affects how I collect, use or communicate personal information, I will provide an appropriate notice on the websites.
